Demidov (Porechje till 1918) – is a town, situated at a
distance of 98 km to the North of Smolensk on the place of the confluence of the rivers
the Kasplja and the Gobza, where the rout «from the Varangians to the Greeks» in the IX–XI
centuries was. The first mentioning of the settlement Porechje was in 1499. Porechje got
the status of a town in 1776. Some monuments of the civil architecture and sacred
buildings of the XVIII–XIX century have remained in the modern town.
The National Park «Smolenskoe
Poozerje» was founded on the territory of the Demidov district. Its unique nature and
the variety of the animal kingdom draw numerous tourists. Here the museum–country-seat
of N.M. Prgevalskij is situated.
Annually at the end of May, the tourist festival of author’s song takes place in the
tourist base «Baklanovo».
The exposition of the Museum of partisan glory tells about the history of the district
during the Great Patriotic war of 1941–1945..
