Desnogorsk is situated at a distance of 140 km from Smolensk.
In 1971 on the bank of the Desna there began the building of the Smolensk Nuclear
Power-station. For 30 years exists this snow-white town of romantics among pine and birch
forests. There are a lot of cherished places in this small town: the town beach, shady
gardens, trade rows, sport halls, museums and the wooden temple of Stephan Velikopermskij.
The excursion to the Smolensk Nuclear Power-station is very interesting and impressive. Citizens
of Desnogorsk carefully keep the memory about the history of the district and sacred
things of Russian people. In 1998 there began the restoration of monuments of history and
architecture, neighboring from the Smolensk Nuclear Power-station. The sacred springs of
Virgin Lady of Kazan and St. Nikolaj Chudotvorez, the church in the country-seat of Glinka
have been restored. All the materials, found during these works, are sent to the town
museum.
