Duhovshina is situated at a distance of 57 km from Smolensk.
The first settlements on the territory of the modern town are very ancient. At the end of
the XIII – the beginning of the XIV century there was a women's monastery here. Around
the monastery, there appeared Dohovskaja Sloboda, settled with traders and artisans. Since
the XVII century Duhovshina has been known as the royal residence. In 1777 by the decree
of Katherine II Duhovshina got the status of a town. Dohovshina is a birthplace of P.K.
Kozlov – the explorer of Asia. An outstanding political figure G.A. Potemkim was born at
a distance of 18 km from Duhovshina in settlement Chizhovo. In the settlement, there was
restored the royal well from which Katherine II drank water.
Tourists can enjoy the beauty of nature of the National Park «Smolenskoe Poozerje», which territory is situated on
the northwestern part of the Duhovshina district..
