The Ugra district is the richest in forests area of the
Smolensk region. Been reserved in their original state the forests occupy two-thirds of
the territory of the Ugra district. The name of the river Ugra, on the banks of which the
district center of the same name is situated, means «meadow» in the language of Old
Balts. Sandy banks, light pine forests, clear pure water impress the lovers of active
outdoor rest. A famous poet and composer M.V. Isakovski was born in the Village Glotovka,
which is at a distance of 36 km from Ugra. His song «Katusha» on the music of Matvej
Blanter is known all over the world. The only in the World museum of the song «Katusha»
is situated nowadays in the Village Vshodi of the Ugra district in the local house of
culture. It was built during Isakovski's lifetime on his private means. The annual
festival of folk art, named the line of Isakovski's poem «A song is speaking with a song»,
is held there..
